Omega Speedmaster FOIS: First Omega in Space 311.32.40.30.01.001
The Moonwatch “First Omega in Space” was inspired by the watch worn by astronaut Wally Shirra in 1962 as he orbited the earth during the “Sigma 7” mission. There are not only aesthetic differences from the Professional but also more wearable proportions: 39.7mm case X 19mm lug width X 47 height. It is still manually powered by the 1861 movement which was in in production for decades and arguably better than the new 3861.
This specific watch was modified: it was fitted with traditional Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch hands and given a patina modification to warm up the overall aesthetic.
Rationale? Many find the Professional 42mm to be too big and the sapphire variations to be too sterile. While the hands on the stock FOIS are not for everyone (too far from original design and the mirrored one on left sub-dial disappears in certain light), the classic Moonwatch hands fit the FIOS as they both have the same movement.
