Rolex Datejust ref. 1601 in Solid 18k Gold circa 1966
The Datejust is quintessential Rolex. Not only are the 1960-1970’s variations of this model with pie-pan depth and open midcentury font in the datewheel exceptionally unique, but the dials often don refined colors and patina. This one —while note rare is different maybe even an Oddjob— as the 18k gold fluted bezel and matching 18k gold case are the main character. The original datewheel also dons the “open” 6 font but the sunburst gold dial is an early service dial as lume does not seem to charge up and the 1,2 and 3 hour plots are diminished. The original dial is included as well.
Datejust overview: The 1600 variation points to a smooth bezel. The 1601 is a gold fluted one and 1603 sports an engine turned steel bezel. Today, the Oyster Perpetual series is hands down the most popular of the crown and the OP is some one the original dna.
Overall, this once is in very good condition with light signs of wear and polish—only notes are that there are some dents and bumps on caseback— all lume is dead like it should. While no service history, this one is smooth and looking healthy on Timegrapher and data is solid—your experience may vary
