Rolex Day Date ref. 1803 circa 1971 Black Satin Matte Dial

The Day Date is quintessential Rolex. It is not only what captures the imagination of a luxury solid 18k gold Swiss watch but also the type of watch best for mobile currency: can get the owner out of a tough place. Culturally, the Day Date is perhaps most synonymous with “The Golden Bear” Jack Nicklaus and for a bit of time his 1967 then later fictional mafia boss Tony Soprano would revive it with a different angle other than the typical watch worn by dignitaries and moguls.

The 1803 is perhaps the early core reference first produced circa late 1950s through the mid to late 1970s. Earlier models had some refinement but the 1803 was just that: pie pan dial, solid 18k gold case but also the last to use a warm acrylic crystal. This particular timepiece dons a matte black dial with light foggy patina—grey in direct light with an even canary yellow aged tritium on markers and hands as well as original custard colored day and date wheels to compliment. The minute track is still crisp and has pronounced Arabic numbers each hour. Such a treat when many examples from this era are plain Jane champagne and gold.

Overall, this once is in very good condition with light signs of wear and polish. While no service history, this one is smooth and looking healthy on Timegrapher but your experience may vary.
