Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 18k solid gold ref. 1501 circa 1975
A solid gold Rolex…mic drop. During the 1970-1980s, 14k gold was the most precious metal that would be imported into the States due to import taxes—therefore—we know this piece was intended for the European market as it is 18k.
The 1500 series is arguably a perfectly proportioned piece and clearly inspires the modern popular OP series today. This 1501 features an engine turned style gold bezel (similar to the steel 15010) and it frames a lovely petroleum black gloss dial. Really, treasure and heirloom material—or the kind of watch that can get you on an aircraft in the middle of catastrophic times.
Overall, the watch appears to have minimal signs of polish as all the factory finish and textures are distinguishable. On the back of the watch, the marks are the gold hallmark stamps and there are also marks where the original bracelet sat. The tritium on the dial and hands are dead like the should be and the datewheel is the original with open 6 and 9 font.
While no service history, the watch looks very healthy on timegrapher. It is running +25 seconds a day but has a 289 amplitude with is strong; data points to no service needed soon.
