Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date ref. 1500 Grey Mosaic Dial circa 1972
The 70s produced some of the most exotic dials—some stock and some have patina’ed. In this unique case, we have an exclusive Asian Rolex market “shantung” aka “mosiac” dials with unique horizontal flow. This is a grey variant is bricked and heathered with a mix of volcano, stone and silver hues. Others include blue, silver and maybe brown (we have a silver and blue). We know they also come in Datejust, Oyster Perpetual Date, and Oyster Perpetual no-date forms. Today, the modern iteration is called the Motif but it doesn’t have soul like this.
This is a refined reference 1500 with open font 6 and 9 in datewheel, crisp oyster case and rivet bracelet paired creamy patina on hands and hour plots. Overall, there is wear on the watch but it is appropriate for the 1970s. While no service history, the automatic non-quickset movement is running and showing accurate and healthy on timegrapher—your experience may slightly vary. Date change also happened about 25mins before midnight too early Overall, no damage on case or bracelet but clear wear and minimal signs of polish.
