Rolex Oysterdate ref. 6694 Basalt Gilt dial circa 1961
The Oysterdate is one of the earliest and purest forms of Rolex: a design language from the oyster case to cyclops powered by a manual wind movement exhibit to core of the brand. Reference 6694 first launched in the 1960s and lasted through the 1980s. Not only is it a fantastic entry into Rolex but also mechanical watches.
This specific Oysterdate has a black patina dial that looks like basalt with gilt font with original datewheel that reveals “open” 6 font. This one has all the details and charm. Lastly, the oyster case sports drilled lugs which enable easy strap changes for a strap monster of a watch—comes on period correct Rolex folded rivet oyster bracelet
Overall, the watch shows honest wear for its age, light signs of polish, and pitting and rings on bezel . While not service history the manual wind movement is keeping time and winding smoothly.
