Rolex Oysterdate ref. 6694 Matte Gilt dial circa 1976 (serial 42##)

The Oysterdate is one of the earliest and purest forms of Rolex: a design language from the oyster case to cyclops powered by a manual wind movement exhibit to core of the brand. Reference 6694 first launched in the 1960s and lasted through the 1980s. Not only is it a fantastic entry into Rolex but also mechanical watches.

This specific Oysterdate has a matte black patina dial with gilt font and matching markers. The original datewheel that reveals “open” 6 font and 9, which is one of the details and charm original to Rolex. Lastly, the oyster case sports drilled lugs which enable easy strap changes for a strap monster of a watch—comes on what appears to be a bracelet from the next era circa 1990-2000s but it is thicker and more substantial.

Overall, the watch shows a very sharp thick case with minimal signs of polish. While no service history the manual wind movement showing numbers that reflect a freshly serviced watch at 0 seconds a day with a 298 amplitude and zero beat error—your experience may slightly vary.

Bracelet: Rolex folded oyster bracelet measures long with minimal stretch. We however only recommend this watch for a wrist 7.25 and under for best look—ideally 7in and under. Note, one link is permanently fused but this should not affect wear as there is a micro adjust to tighten and one removable link.
