Seiko Captain Willard ref. 6105-8110 circa 1975
In the 1979 Francis Ford Coppola film, Apocalypse Now, Martin Sheen's character— Captain Willard is seen rocking the Seiko ref. 6105-8110. While the fictional lore is set, the Willard was a popular choice among U.S. service members during the Vietnam War in the early 1970s for its rugged nature and resistance to the harsh jungle environment.
The 1960-1970’s ultimately shaped the future of Japanese divers and solidified the 62mas and Turtle shaped designs as icons. Today, Seiko produces re-imaginations of the originals at different piece tiers starting with the 5 series to the SPB line and the luxury SJE level.
To the specifics: The crown is signed “->Lock”, which is cool and unique in general and the dial is a “resist” instead of “proof”. Lastly, the stoplight seconds hand is also fantastic. While we are not experts on 1970s Seiko, we do have insights. Usually these pieces are beat and the lume is a mutant lime with black decay—this example is too clean for a watch dated April 1975 (584184). It is probably restored and relumed and done extremely well. The crystal was also replaced with a sapphire one.
Ultimately, this is a great looking wearable watch. While no service history, it is running like it was freshly done. Overall, there are light signs of wear on the case.
